This is an exciting opportunity for a Software Developer to join our award-winning Students’ Union Management System (SUMS) Team at the University of Lincoln Students’ Union (ULSU).

SUMS is an award winning, sector-leading CRM system; developed by a Students’ Union for Students’ Unions. The SUMS system helps ensure that students at the University of Lincoln (and all other Students’ Union that hold a licence for the system), have the best possible experiences during their time at University. Our in-house team design and build modules for the platform and SU App to ensure the experience of our customers is continually improving and evolving.

Working within the SUMS team, this role will support continual improvement and best practices throughout the software development lifecycle. You’ll help develop and maintain our award-winning Students’ Union Management System, ensuring it remains scalable, secure, and user-focused.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, and data models using PHP and Laravel.
  • Optimise system performance, reliability, and security.
  • Support and troubleshoot production systems (Tier 2 & 3 technical support).
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of development processes, tooling, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the wider SUMS and ULSU teams to deliver new product features.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and recommend improvements.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 1 to 3+ years experience in PHP/Laravel backend development.
  • Experience with APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems.
  • Problem-solving mindset with attention to code quality and documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an Agile/Scrum environment.
